This original rug composition was created by the textile designer Elise Djo-Bourgeois in the early 1930s. Hand-tufted in a New Zealand wool pile, it combines graphic modernity and timelessness through a play of cleverly interwoven shapes.

Élise Djo-Bourgeois

Élise Djo-Bourgeois

Born in Oran in 1894, Elise received at an early age an education in the arts. As a student, she attended the Académie Julian and Les Ateliers Montparnasse allowing her own geometric and modern style to blossom, which was fully expressed between 1920 and 1937.

Elise Djo-Bourgeois

Djo-Bourgeois! A mythical name for fans of the modernist movement that in fact belies the fact of two artists with complementary talents: Georges Bourgeois, known as Djo-Bourgeois, architect and designer recognized with a dazzling career, and Elise, his wife, textile designer. Like many artists of the time, they created as a duo. The former works on space and imagines furniture that the latter covers. As famous as Sonia Delaunay at the time, Elise was nevertheless forgotten, due to a career that was abandoned too early following the sudden death of her husband.
