FLORAL FRESCOES: CARTE BLANCHE TO RAPHAEL SCHMITT

Painted artworks and vibrant colors are making a grand comeback, adorning walls and windows to bring a unique style to our living spaces. By collaborating with a variety of artists, each with a distinct style, Maison Pierre Frey offers a diverse range of graphic expressions in its collections. For the Jardins Secrets collection, the design studio gave carte blanche to Raphaël Schmitt, transforming one of his works into both wallpaper and fabric.

Raphaël Schmitt, a multi-talented artist

Raphaël Schmitt is an artist brimming with energy and ideas. With a background in woodwork and ornamental sculpture, he initially worked in fashion and window display design in New York before returning to Paris. There, he collaborated with the iconic Loulou de la Falaise in the creation of her fashion house, eventually dedicating himself fully to painting.

From rigor to artistic freedom

At the prestigious Van der Kelen Institute, Raphaël mastered classical painting techniques. This foundation allows him to merge tradition with contemporary creativity. Raphaël’s technique is deeply rooted in tradition.

He mastered the art of patine à la bière (beer patina), a delicate process where natural pigments are mixed with beer to create a transparent glaze. His confident and swift strokes breathe life into his frescoes, creating captivating designs that range from bold tropical forests to delicate, pastel-toned versions.

The inspiration

Inspired by 18th-century engravings, botanical prints, and Buffon’s ornithological sketches, Raphaël’s work bridges historical art forms with modern flair. In the "Jardins Secrets" collection, Raphaël Schmitt has brought his vision of a lush, fantastical tropical forest to life.

The collection includes two versions of his "Flore" design: one graphic in black and white, and the other softer, with a delicate watercolor wash in pastel tones. These vibrant designs are now available as both fabric and wallpaper, ready to transform your space into a vibrant garden of wonders.

Raphaël's artistic philosophy

Raphaël reflects on his diverse journey, from his rigorous training in woodworking to his time in New York where he embraced freedom and creativity, and the influence of Loulou de la Falaise’s bold approach to color. All of these experiences have shaped his distinctive artistic personality.

“Woodworking taught me rigor and precision, New York gave me freedom, madness, and energy. Loulou showed me the art of mixing colors, embracing exuberance, and living without limits. Van der Kelen brought back discipline and technique. Though eclectic, each of these stages played a crucial role in shaping my life and building my artistic identity.”
