Pierre Frey X Maria Shell: The art of quilting

MARIA SHELL DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM THE RICH TRADITION AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OF AMERICAN QUILTS.

After years of honing her skills in cutting, piecing, and quilting, this acclaimed Alaskan artist skillfully transforms traditional quilt elements into striking compositions that seamlessly blend patterns, repetition, and vibrant colors.

THE ART OF QUILTING

Captivated by the hypnotic effect and vibrant interplay of colors in her work, Maison Pierre Frey invited a talented new artist to collaborate with the studio. Together, they reinterpreted the quilting technique, showcasing the artist's compositions as fabric, wallpaper, and a rug.

Patterns and Colors Inspired by American Quilts

"Quilting" is a sewing technique that joins layers of fabric, often with patterns, using either hand or machine stitching.

A delicate and detailed craft

Maria Shell begins her creative process by exploring and reinterpreting various quilt patterns. She then narrows her focus to a pattern she calls “the grid,” which allows her to experiment endlessly with lines, textures, and colors. The result is a series of dynamic compositions that are striking both individually and when combined.

MARIA FABRIC

To highlight Maria Shell’s work, the Pierre Frey design studio reimagined the quilting effect with a stunning wool embroidery. Entirely hand-stitched, the fabric retains the colors and proportions of the original artwork.

MARIA WALLPAPER

A matching wallpaper has been developed and digitally printed to capture the intricate texture details of the embroidery.

MARIA RUG

The hand-tufted rug brings the design to life in vibrant colors, with a wool that is both soft and vividly hued.
