Cordage
Starting in 1987, Christian Astuguevieille began to design sculpture and furniture in rope. Matter meets meaning when he rolls a rope and sculpts a chair from it; it’s also a story of colors, volume and dreams when he paints and coats this creation. He is still fascinated by this process and continues to develop it. The CORDAGE fabric illustrates this work and the artist’s research with the development of a weave with a surprising volume that closely resembles the original works and the rope that the artist particularly favors. Here, rope seems to wind around the fabric, forming four interlaced loops.

Christian Astuguevieille

Christian Astuguevieille

A teacher by training, Christian Astuguevieille has made a name for himself over the past few decades as artistic director of fashion houses and perfumers such as Molinard, Rochas, Nina Ricci, or Comme des Garçons, for whom he creates some sixty perfumes. But it is above all for the objects and furniture developed around his own imagination that he is recognized and exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. Unclassifiable artist and a lover of great freedom, Christian Astuguevieille loves to confuse. Since the 1980s, he has been developing his sensory and dreamlike work by drawing his inspiration from the symbols and rites of ancient civilizations in Asia and Oceania. He draws inspiration from Japanese aesthetics to wrap everyday objects with rope or create his imaginary writing. The artist's leitmotiv is to play with codes and periods.

Les Coquecigrues - C. Astuguevieille

A long-time friend of Christian Astuguevieille, Patrick Frey had always wanted to create a collection with him. He appreciates his personality, his originality and his rigor. He also admires the constancy in his work and the original way in which he appropriates traditional French culture, purifying it to modernize it while preserving its soul.

Christian Astuguevieille made a name for himself as artistic director of perfume and fashion houses; Molinard, Rochas, Nina Ricci or the famous japan brand Comme des Garçons, for whom he created about sixty perfumes and invented such smells as clothes drying in the sun or overheated photocopiers! Mr. Astuguevieille is above all known for the objects and furniture developed around his own imagination, and that are now exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.
